The problem
Last-semester nursing students are experiencing burnout and need a tailored study plan that aligns with their needs. Previous research revealed that students perceive the lessons in HESI Compass as drawn out, cumbersome and often a poor use of their time.
Business impact
If Elsevier fails to provide a comprehensive lesson player that meets a student's needs, HESI Compass would fall behind key competitors. That gap would continue to grow unless we started to meet the needs of our user by giving them a more impactful and intuitive experience.
Approach
01
Research
I facilitated research sessions with students, which revealed their desire for more control over the learning process, with personalized lessons that are tailored to their strengths and weaknesses. They also emphasized the need for more practice questions to better gauge their progress.

02
Strategy
I brought the student experience to life with storyboards and mapped the user journey to highlight core tasks, pain points, and emotions felt during each touchpoint. I led an ideation workshop with the product manager and develops, this led to a shared understanding of the users and problem space. Using "How might we" statements, we reframed these challenges into opportunities, then applied a crazy 8 exercise to rapidly brainstorm diverse solutions.

03
Design
Building on the research insights and the innovative ideas generated, I developed three concept designs, each exploring different approaches to the navigation and information architecture. User testing revealed that students felt overwhelmed by an all-in-one experience and preferred reading material to be optional yet easily accessible. Most importantly, the testing validated the value of practice questions and ability to filter topics based on readiness. Incorporating this feedback, I moved forward with a design solution that prioritized usability, relevance, and value for the students.

Solution
A redesigned lesson player that provides a seamless and personalized learning experience, helping nursing students achieve their goal of passing the NCLEX.
